Black Belt Examinations

You have passed all the exams from white to red-black belt and are now – after another intensive year of learning and training – ready for your first DAN exam.

There are only two exam dates per year. These always take place as part of a training camp at home or abroad.

Only Sabomnim can admit you to a DAN exam. Another requirement is that you have completed the DAN ritual a few weeks previously and fulfill the other requirements listed below.

POOM - Examination regulations (under the age of 16)

Examination for the 1st POOM

These examination regulations apply ONLY to young people up to 16 years of age. For adults, see below.

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • 3 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritua
  • Hyong: 1-13 (Diagram), 12 (Front), 7+8+13 (Fight) 
  • Poomsae: 8 
  • Training hours:  100 
  • Breaking test:  Special 
  • Self-defense:  Hosinsul-Hyong 2
  • Knife techniques: 5 knife defense techniques against 2 attackers
  • Stick techniques: Stick defense 1-8, Stick against stick 1-7 
  • Fitness: 30 push-ups, 3 min wall sit, abdominal exercise 3 min, 50 burpees 
  • One-step combat: 3 techniques followed by a break test 
  • Free fight: 3 opponents with BT: hand, foot, jump kick; 
    fight against 1 opponent shows technique
  • Kimoodo/Other: Stretch Diagram Form 
  • Values: generosity, charity 
  • Sponsor student: Discipline Hyong (at least 1 person with a white or yellow belt)

Examination for the 2nd POOM

These examination regulations apply ONLY to  young people up to 16 years of age.  For adults, see below. 

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • Give 5 trainings + 1 supervision
  • 5 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual
  • Hyong:  1-16 (Diagram), 16 (Front), 16 (Fight), Stop Hyong
  • Poomsae: 9-11 
  • Training hours: 200 
  • Breaking test:  Hand breaking test 2 boards from combination, foot breaking test 2 boards from combination, SPECIAL
  • Self-defense:  Knife-Hyong, Hosinsul-Hyong 3, Stick-Hyong 1+2
  • Theory:  Describe 10 positive points in sentences, what TKD has done and changed in your life (must be handed in or presented during the DAN ritual) 
  • One-step combat:  5 techniques IBO TAERYON (two-step combat) 
  • Free fight: 3 opponents with BT: 1x hand, 2x jump kick
  • Kimoodo/Other:  Surprise: 2 technique combinations from the current training program followed by a breaking test 
  • Values: Wisdom
  • Sponsored student: Hyong discipline with special breaking test (at least 2 people with green or blue belt)

Examination for the 3rd POOM

These examination regulations apply ONLY to young people up to 16 years of age. For adults, see below.

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • Give 10 trainings + 2 supervisions
  • 10 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual
  • Hyong:  1-18 (Diagram), 18 (Front), 18 (Fight),
    Drum Hyong 14+15, 12th Hyong (always maintain eye contact with the examiner during execution)
  • Poomsae:  12+13 
  • Training hours:  300
  • Breaking test:  Hand breaking test 3 boards from combination, foot breaking test 3 boards from combination, SPECIAL, 1x blind breaking test
  • Self-defense:  Form of defense with at least 9 attacks (including at least 3x stick-knife-grip)
  • Theory:  Write an essay of at least 2 pages in the sense of your own “autobiography” (must be submitted or presented at the DAN ritual) 
  • One-step combat:  Defense form only punches and kicks (at least 4 attackers with at least 2 attacks each)
  • Free fight:  4 opponents with BT: 2x hand, 2x foot
  • Kimoodo/Other:  Surprise: 3 technique combinations from the current training program followed by a breaking test 
  • Values:  kindness, love
  • Sponsored students:  group performance (min. 5 students)

From POOM to DAN- Examination regulations (16 years)

Examination: from 1st POOM to 1st DAN

These examination regulations apply to young people, from their 16th birthday onwards, for the change from POOM to DAN.

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • 3 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual

  • Self-defense:  (at extreme speed) Hosinsul-Hyong 2,  5 knife defense techniques against 2 attackers, stick defense 1-8, stick against stick 1-7 
  • Fitness: 30 push-ups, 3 min wall sit, abdominal exercise 3 min, 50 burpees 
  • One-step combat: (all 3 techniques surrounded in one pass), 3 techniques with breaking test afterward
  • Free fight: 3 opponents with BT: hand, foot, jump kick,
    fight against 1 opponent on technique
  • Kimoodo/Other: Stretch Diagram Form

Examination: from 3rd POOM to 1st DAN

These examination regulations apply to young people, from their 16th birthday onwards, for the change from POOM to DAN.

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • 3 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual
  • Hyong:  1-13 (Diagram), 12 (Front), 7+13 (Fight), 14, 15, 16 (Diagram), 16 (Front), 3 Hyongs from Hyong with music, self-created Hyong
  • Poomsae:  9, 10,11, 12
  • Training hours:  3 00
  • Breaking test: Special 
  • Self-defense: (all mixed in one performance) Hosinsul-Hyong 2,  5 knife defense techniques against 2 attackers, stick defense 1-8, stick against stick 1-7 
  • Fitness: 30 push-ups, 3 min wall sit, abdominal exercise 3 min, 50 burpees 
  • One-step combat: (all 3 techniques surrounded in one pass), 3 techniques with breaking test afterward
  • Free fight: 3 opponents mixed with one-step fight, free fight and breaking test
  • Kimoodo/Other: Stretch Diagram Form

  • Sponsor student: Discipline Hyong (at least 5 people with white-red belt)

Examination: Ex-2. POOM from 1st DAN to 2nd DAN

This examination regulation only applies to young people who already have the 2nd POOM for the 2nd DAN examination.

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • Give 5 trainings + 1 supervision
  • 5 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual 
  • Hyong:  1-16 (Diagram), 16 (Front), 16 (Fight), Stop Hyong
  • Poomsae:  10-11 
  • Training hours:  200
  • Breaking test:  Hand breaking test 2 boards from combination, foot breaking test 2 boards from combination, SPECIAL
  • Self-defense:  (extremely fast and clean) Knife-Hyong, Hosinsul-Hyong 3, Stick-Hyong 1+2
  • Theory:  Describe 10 positive points in sentences, what TKD has done and changed in your life (must be handed in or presented during the DAN ritual) 
  • One-step combat:  (extremely fast and clean) 5 techniques IBO TAERYON (two-step combat) 
  • Free fight:  3 opponents with BT: 1x hand, 2x jump kick
  • Kimoodo/Other:  Surprise: 2 technique combinations from the current training program followed by a breaking test 
  • Values:  Wisdom
  • Sponsored student:  Hyong discipline with special breaking test (at least 2 people with green or blue belt)

Examination: Ex-3. POOM from 1st DAN to 2nd DAN

These examination regulations only apply to young people who have already achieved the 3rd POOM for the 2nd DAN examination .

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • Give 5 trainings + 1 supervision
  • 5 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual 
  • Hyong:  1-16 (Diagram), 16 (Front), 16 (Fight), Stop-Hyong, own Hyong with 60 sec. music, one Hyong backwards
  • Poomsae:  10, 11, 12, 13 
  • Breaking test:  hand breaking test 2 boards from combination, foot breaking test 2 boards from combination, 2 boards each hand and foot in one movement, SPECIAL
  • Self-defense:  (extremely fast and clean) Knife-Hyong 2, Hosinsul-Hyong 1-3 in a row, Stick-Hyong 3
  • Theory:  Interview 10 people via video: “what has changed in their lives through Taekwondo” (to be handed in via USB during the DAN ritual)
  • One-step combat: 3 techniques SAMBO TAERYON (three-step combat) created by yourself 
  • Free fight: 3 opponents with BT: 1x hand, 2x jump kick, free fight show fight 1 opponent created by yourself
  • Kimoodo/Other:  Surprise: 2 technique combinations from the current training program followed by a breaking test 
  • Values: Talk: Which values ​​do I regularly apply in my everyday life and which ones do I still need to work on?
  • Sponsored student:  Hyong discipline with special breaking test (at least 5 people with red-black belt)

Examination: Ex-3. POOM from 2nd DAN to 3rd DAN

These examination regulations only apply to young people who have already passed the 3rd POOM for the 3rd DAN examination .

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

  • Give 10 trainings + 2 supervision
  • 10 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual
  •   Hyong:  1-20 (Diagram), 18 (Front), 20 (Fight),
  • Drum Hyong 14+15, 12th Hyong (always maintain eye contact with the examiner during execution)
  • Poomsae:  12, 13, 14, 15
  • Breaking test:  Violent hand breaking test: Man: 3 men’s boards + 1 women’s board / Woman: 2 women’s boards + 1 men’s board, Violent foot breaking test: Man: 3 men’s boards + 1 women’s board / Woman: 2 women’s boards + 1 men’s board, 3 SPECIAL, 1x blind breaking test
  • Self-defense:  Form of defense with at least 9 attacks (including at least 3x stick-knife-grip)
  • Theory:  Period 1st Poom, 2nd Poom, 3rd Poom, 1st Dan, 2nd Dan… what happened? How has the perspective changed? (must be submitted or presented at the DAN ritual)
  • One-step combat:  Defense form only punches and kicks (at least 4 attackers with at least 2 attacks each)
  • Free fight:  4 opponents with BT: 2x hand, 2x foot
  • Kimoodo/Other:  Surprise: 3 technique combinations from the current training program followed by a breaking test 
  • Values:  kindness, love
  • Sponsored students:  group demonstration (at least 5 people, all black belts)

DAN - Examination regulations (from 16 years)

Examination for 1st DAN

This examination regulation applies to adults aged 16 and over.

Prerequisites for admission to the exam:

    Music form min. 90 sec. (self-created)
  • Poomsae 14+15+16 
  • Training hours:  4 00 
  • Breaking test:  Hand breaking test 4 boards from combination
    Foot breaking test 4 boards from combination
    SPECIAL 
  • Self-defense + one-step combat:
    suitable for demonstration, creates a show as the main actor with at least 5 attackers
    mixed with IlBO, HOSINSUL, STICK, KNIFE, FREE FIGHT (at least 2 min)
  • Theory:  5-page seminar paper on a “taekwondo-relevant” topic
    (must be submitted at the DAN ritual and discussed with the system leader)
  • Kimoodo/Other:  Surprise: 2 technique combinations from the current training program followed by a breaking test 
  • Values:  Spirit of Unity 
  • Sponsored students:   group performance without being an actor yourself (min. 10 students + min. 2 min)

Examination for 5th DAN

This examination regulation applies to adults aged 16 and over.

  • Give 50 trainings + 5 supervisions
  • 20 participations in tournament, workshop, seminar, demonstration, camp without exam (counts 3 times)
  • DAN ritual
  • Hyong: self-determining
  • Poomsae self-determining
  • Training hours: 5 00 
  • Break test  self-determining
  • Self-defense/one-step combat/free combat: 
    self-determining
  • Theory:  Free presentation of the development of Taekwondo
  • Kimoodo/Other:  self-determining
  • Values:  Balance in every life situation (middle path)
  • Sponsored students:   self-determining
